The p-adic numbers (where p is a prime number) can be seen as one possible link between number theory and analysis. They therefore play an important role in various mathematical areas. The so-called strong triangle inequality of the p-adic absolute value (|a+b|≤max(|a|,|b|) for p-adic numbers a and b) has many strange and surprising consequences.
In our talk, we give the definition of p-adic numbers, several elementary results on p-adic functional analysis and a short overwiev on possible applications.
