Preliminaries

The German bureaucracy is not easy to deal with. You need to do things in the correct way and order. Here are a few tips to help you.

If you are an international student in Dresden and seek contact to German students, you may want to look at the Web pages of the Agree-Dresden e. V.Programm. This way, you may obtain assistance after your arrival in Dresden.

List of Documents

In general, you should bring the following documents from home with you:

  • Your passport with a valid student visa
  • A document stating your health insurance
  • For EU members, only
  • Students from other countries are required to take out health insurance in Germany
  • The letter of admittance from the Technische Universität Dresden, referred to as "Zulassungsbescheid"
  • The letter from the Studentenwerk confirming your accommodation
  • For Chinese and Vietnamese students only: the APS certificate
  • Your original school leaving certificate and Bachelor Diploma with your academic records from your home university or other certificates of your studies at your home university

The Studentenwerk

In Germany, the Studentenwerk are responsible for the economic and social guidance and counselling of students. These organisations run halls of residence and refectories, administrate the national educational assistance program and offer students a range of guidance and counselling services as well as various cultural events and activities.

The first office we advice you to visit is the Studentenwerk Dresden. After presenting your documents, you obtain a bank account form and you are assigned a room in a students' residence. Before, you must pay a deposit of about 200 EUR.

Hostels

It may occur that you cannot enter your room immediately after your arrival (because of your flight schedule, i.e., if you arrive at the weekend or very late at night). Please consider booking a room at one of the Dresden youth hostels. Prices are about 20-25 EUR per night. You should make a reservation in advance! Addresses are available from the this web page.

The Students' Residence

You then go to your assigned student residence and call at the caretaker's office (open only at certain times). Here you will sign the transfer protocols and receive your keys. The caretaker will also give you a room inventory list which you must check immediately and return one copy.

The Registration/Enrolment procedure

All information on the registration/enrolment procedure is provided by this web page. You must

  • enrol at the TUD (transfer the semester social fee)
