Selected Advances in Data Semantics

Talk by Pascal Hitzler
We present some recent advances in ontology engineering and its applications. This includes two Protege plug-ins and an extension to the OWL API which simplify the dealing with logical axioms in ontology modeling: The ROWLTab allows the user to enter OWL axioms in the form or rules; a formal evaluation which we conducted shows that this form of OWL modeling is quicker and less error-prone than the standard Protege interface. The OWLAX plug-in provides a diagram-based approach to the modeling of most common logical axioms. The OWL API LaTeX renderer provides transcriptions into description logic syntax. We will also present first results of some ongoing work on explaining trained neural networks by means of semantic background knowledge.
