At the Institute for Theoretical Computer Science, the chair for Knowledge-Based Systems is looking for a

Doctoral or Postdoctoral Researcher (m/f)

(subject to personal qualification employees are remunerated according to salary group E 13 TV-L)

to conduct research in the DFG-funded project “Data Integration and Access by Merging Ontologies and Databases” (DIAMOND) for nine months. The period of employment is governed by § 2 Fixed Term Research Contracts Act (Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz – WissZeitVG). Pending approval of the planned third funding period of the project, the contract may be extended by another year. The position offers the chance to obtain further academic qualification (Ph.D. or postdoctral thesis). The project is embedded within an inspiring research environment. The International Center for Computational Logic (ICCL) of TU Dresden is one of the biggest research centres for formal methods, logic, and artificial intelligence. The chair for Knowledge-Based Systems is part of the Cluster of Excellence Center for Advancing Electronics Dresden (cfaed). TU Dresden is one of the leading universities in Germany, and one of the eleven German universities that have been awarded excellence status in the national Excellence Initiative.

Topics: How can modern information systems take advantage of new developments in knowledge representation, theoretical computer science, and the semantic web? Project DIAMOND tackles this question by exploring the use of knowledge representation technologies (e.g., ontologies) in data management (e.g., for querying knowledge graphs). Both areas are seeing exciting developments recently: data management has grown beyond traditional database systems by considering new data models and application contexts, while knowledge representation has grown beyond traditional AI systems to address challenges in ontological modelling and data integration. The intersection of both areas offers a wide range of interesting and highly relevant research topics.

Prerequisites: a (soon to be) completed MSc or equivalent in computer science, mathematics, or similar; the ability to work independently within a team; an integrative and cooperative personality with excellent communication and social skills; fluency in English, written and oral. German language skills are not required, as the research and teaching environment is international. Helpful areas of expertise include knowledge representation and logic, computability and complexity, as well as practical experience in programming and administrating IT systems. Candidates are expected to have a publication record that matches their personal career stage.

Informal enquiries can be submitted to Dr. Markus Kroetzsch (+49 351 463 38486; markus.kroetzsch@tu-dresden.de). Applications from women are particularly welcome. The same applies to people with disabilities.
